Why I Serve—Carl Crothers
Carl Crothers joined the Board of Associates in Christian Counseling early in 2011.
His first exposure to Associates came from his friend and current Board member, Bob McHone, who invited him and his wife to attend our spring banquet.
“As the editor of the newspaper for many years, I became interested in mental health issues after cuts in state funding for mental health care caused so much confusion and turmoil for many families -- and continues to do so,” Carl stated. “The invitation to join the board was a natural extension of that interest. Since I was no longer associated with the newspaper, I readily accepted.”
Crothers went on to share his belief that “mental illness is often an overarching issue for those affected and can lead to a variety of problems, such as joblessness, poverty, domestic abuse and substance abuse. If Associates can help a portion of those people deal with their illness, it may help relieve the burden on many public agencies that deal with people in crisis. Also, state funding of mental health care is inadequate and insurance companies still do not deal with the illness uniformly, so Associates in Christian Counseling is filling a serious gap in care, especially for those who cannot afford to pay. It performs a critical public service.”
Along with our staff and the rest of the Board, Carl believes that “God can heal the afflicted. Those who are suffering and who need help are indeed the ‘least of these’ and we are called to serve them. No one is turned away. I believe that's the definition of ministry.”
Carl considers it an honor to serve on the Board and be associated with such compassionate, caring people. We consider it an honor to have him serve this ministry.
