| An Interview with Kay Levan, Christian Life Coach
Associates in Christian Counseling adds a new service and a new face this month.
Kay Levan, a certified Christian Life Coach, will be joining Associates.
How did you become interested in becoming a Christian Life Coach?
I worked in the corporate business world for more than 25 years. During that time in Human Resource Development, I did a lot of career and executive coaching within the company. After taking early retirement, I began to seek what door God would open next for me. About 3 or 4 years ago, I discovered the field of Christian life coaching. I was excited to learn that programs were available that would allow me to combine my work experience with my faith in order to help others.
What type of training and certification does a Christian Life Coach have?
There are many different training programs available today for certification in life coaching or Christian life coaching. I completed the certification program of the Professional Christian Counseling and Coaching Academy in Cape Coral, FL. I also earned a certificate in Basic Theological Studies, a 2-year graduate level program offered by Pfeiffer University/Wesley Theological Seminary in their School for Deacon Education. This, of course, is in addition to my BA and MBA in Business from University of North Carolina, Greensboro.
How would you describe Christian life coaching?
The simplest answer is that coaching is forward looking. The agenda comes almost completely from the client. It is the coach’s goal to help a person identify the goals they want to achieve, to outline a strategy for moving forward and provide accountability I ask lots of questions in the process and may provide actual assignments in order to measure a client’s progress.
As a Christian life coach, my desire is to help a client see how God has gifted them what direction He might want for their lives. I assume God’s Spirit is the 3rd party in our dialogue.
What other things are distinctive to coaching?
Although it can be done face-to-face, almost all coaching is done by telephone. Interestingly, as part of my own training, I had 3 months of coaching. It was a tremendous experience—and I’ve never met my coach to this day!
The initial session is always complimentary to see if a coach and a client have the rapport to work together. Following this, groups of sessions are set up.
Any closing thoughts….
God has given each of us gifts to use in specific ways. Sometimes we get stuck and need help moving forward. I enjoy the opportunity to work with people to help them move “off stuck” and see what God has for them next!
