Fresh Start - Dr. Joe Verga
There’s something unique about January 1st each year. It’s
a day like any other made simply of 24 hours. Yet somehow that day
seems brimming with more hope than any other. People make resolutions
to do things they’ve avoided or to stop doing things they
know aren’t productive or good for them. At one time or another,
everyone longs for a fresh start.
“As Christians, the Gospel offers us that fresh start. Christ’s
atonement wipes our slate clean and provides us with a new beginning,”
shared Joe. “The powerful reality of God’s grace is
a force for change in our lives, and God’s grace is fresh
everyday.”
The concept of a journey is a common theme in both therapy and
Christianity. “John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress
describes Pilgrim’s journey. St. Augustine described life
as a search for what would fill the empty space in the human heart.
In therapy, people are on a journey to make changes in life or relationships,”
Dr. Verga stated.
Just as with New Year’s resolutions, it takes courage and
determination to make the journey toward healing. Just as a million
excuses may keep us from the gym, or eating well, or quitting smoking,
so the enemy of our souls will help us find substitutes for what
we really need. “Many will consider seeing a counselor, but
not actually do anything about it. Many will call for information,
but not actually make an appointment. Others will come, but stop
when it gets hard or uncomfortable. The success stories belong to
those who persevere and trust God to see them through. If we do
our part, He is faithful to do His,” concluded Dr. Verga.
