Counseling, A Kingdom Perspective
For
Dr. Joe Verga, questions pertaining to human nature combined with
his own salvation experience, led him to consider how people change
and are restored. That pursuit led to a PhD in Clinical Psychology
from Fuller Seminary’s School of Psychology nearly 30 years
ago.
“Fuller’s program which integrated psychology and theology
was the only one of its kind approved by the American Psychological
Association at that time. It combined faith and spirituality with
mental and emotional health. For me,” he said, “it seemed
a more complete approach. It is clear to me now that for the Christian,
mental health is part of a larger picture of where that person is
in relation to God and other people. There is a Kingdom reality
to take into account.”
In the past 15 years or so, Verga has seen changes in the practice
of psychology. “Spirituality is more diverse in our culture
today. This has brought a deeper awareness of its importance. Research
has shown its impact; treatment approaches recognize it; insurance
companies accept services from Christian centers. Of those who choose
ACC, Dr. Verga believes that 90-95% select it because of its Christian
perspective. Of the others, nearly half will consider spiritual
issues at some point.
“As Christians, our perspectives and views of reality are
shaped by our beliefs in a sovereign God whose workmanship we are.
We are God’s projects! That perspective is not brought to
bear in a secular mental health setting.” When describing
his role as a therapist, Dr. Verga shared that “a client’s
sojourn with me is just one part of their journey. My goal is to
be an agent of change for them, not get in God’s way, and
help them gain that Kingdom perspective on their lives.”
Dr. Joe Verga has been Executive Director of Associates in
Christian Counseling since it opened in the fall of 1991.
