You Help Me?
In the best of all possible worlds, everyone would be happy, healthy,
and well-adjusted. In the second best of all possible worlds, everyone
would seek proactive care for their physical and emotional well-being.
But in the real world, what does it take to make that first phone
call? Several ACC therapists shared their thoughts on what often
motivates a person to come for counseling.
Perhaps the first hurdle to overcome is the stigma people sense
that it is weak to seek help. As a nation, we have an image of the
rugged individual who can do it on their own. Sadly, that view may
keep many from coming. Seeking help should be seen as strong and
wise.
Sometimes people come at the urging of others. Family members or
co-workers may see changes or struggles which a person has yet to
acknowledge in themselves. When a person’s symptoms are getting
in the way of their daily lives and affecting their relationships
with others, it may be time to suggest they see a counselor to assess
their emotions. Just as they would see a physician for physical
pain, emotional issues such sadness, anxiety, or stress, may be
alleviated by seeing a counselor.
Pain, the ultimate motivator, helps us realize
that we need help.
Humility enables us to admit that we cannot do
it all ourselves.
Courage lets us face the unknown as we open up
our feelings to a “stranger.”
Faith promises God’s support and that we
will see Him in new ways through this journey
Hope assures us things can be better than they
are and that there is a purpose in all things.
