November 2009

Look out! The holidays are almost upon us. Are you ready for the sprint to finish the year?

It seems as though no matter how hard we try, the holidays still take a toll on us. In this edition our counselors share some ideas for managing and enjoying these family times. And just in case, we have added another therapist to our staff to help us keep up. Meet David Pate.

With a grateful heart,
Dr. Joe Verga

Celebrating the Holidays: How to Navigate the Planning
Dr. Karolyn Thompson

As spouses think about making decisions on how to spend the holiday, they might consider that concessions must be made that are beneficial to the family. The way to do that depends on how to make the celebration unique to the wants and needs of the family.  Such decisions can be stressful to say the least, but the focus is to celebrate special occasions by spending time together. "There's no place like home for the holidays"...or is there?

“Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother’s house we go…” The lyrics make it sound so simple.  In real families, however, celebrating holidays is often much more complicated. Read More

Honor Someone this Christmas

At Christmas we want to remember people who are important to us.  Often those folks simply don’t need another “thing” but would be touched by something done to help others.

Consider making a gift in their honor to Associates in Christian Counseling.

We will send them a letter acknowledging your kindness and include their name in our January e-newsletter as having been honored in this special way.

Particularly this year, let your gift-giving provide a two-fold blessing—

  • Honor someone who is special to you and
  • Support a local ministry seeking to serve those struggling emotionally at this time.

To give a gift In Honor Of or In Memory Of  someone special to you,
contact Rick Cole at 336-896-0065, ext. 205, or rcole@christiancounseling.org

The Common Thread

The family.  We were a strange little band of characters trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another's desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together.  ~ Erma Bombeck

A Thought

You don’t choose your family.
They are God’s gift to you, as you are to them.
