March 2008

As we look at many of the blessings in our midst, our theme this month is community.

We take a look at therapy and support groups, both powerful tools for healing and recovery that are now part of most communities throughout our state and nation. Share the Fruit is new feature being introduced in which we hear someone’s story of how they were helped through the ministry of Associates in Christian Counseling.

We also want to acknowledge gifts designated to Associates through United Way which used to be known as Community Chest, just like in Monopoly, as well as a unique opportunity coming our way from a restaurant in our community, River Birch Lodge.

Blessings,
Dr. Joe Verga
Executive Director, ACC

Therapy Groups — An Interview with Dodie Caudill

Groups come in two main categories: therapy groups and support or self-care groups. Therapy groups may focus on therapy or be educational but would be led by a professional. Support or self-care groups would have lay leadership and focus on a shared experience. Read More

Self-Esteem Group

Associates’ therapist, Dodie Caudill, will be offering a women’s group based on David Burns’ book, Ten Days to Self-Esteem.

The group will meet on Mondays for 10 weeks with each session lasting 1 ½ hours.
It will meet at mid-day to accommodate work schedules. Exact time tbd.

For more information, please call 336-896-0065 and leave your name and contact information with the receptionist.

Support Groups

Support groups, sometimes called self-help groups, are small voluntary groups of people who share a common problem, condition, or life situation. Drawn together by their common struggle, they learn that by helping one another, they help themselves. In groups, members find a unique understanding and guidance that comes from others who have experienced the same problem.

There is a support group for every population from children to grandparents and for those dealing with every issue from physical illnesses, addictions, and emotional or mental health issues to name just a few. The following lists are only a very small sampling of groups which are available:

Sharing the Fruit - Felicia's Story

Most ministries are pleased to share the fruit of their efforts. It is a cause for rejoicing as well as an encouragement to their supporters. Associates usually does not have that opportunity. Counseling by its very nature must assure privacy and confidentiality. On occasion, someone is so moved by their experience, that they want to speak out as an encouragement to others. A Thought

Two are better than one…
If one falls down, his friend can help him up…
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
Ecclesiastes 4: parts of verses 9-12

Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another, ‘What you, too? I thought I was the only one!’
