June 2008

Primary relationships between children and their parents are among the most powerful influences in our development. These set the stage for all other relationships including friendships, marriage, and even our relationship with God. This month, in honor of Father’s Day, we look specifically at fathers and sons.

We hope you will be edified and encouraged.

Father's Day

Inspired by a Mother’s Day sermon, Sonora Dodd got a vision for honoring fathers, particularly her own who had raised his 6 children alone after his wife died in childbirth. Thanks to his June birthday, the first celebration was held on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, WA. It wasn’t until 1966, however, that President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day. In 1972 a law making it a permanent celebration was signed by President Richard Nixon.
