July 2007

Hopefully you’ve enjoyed at least one picnic this summer. In case you haven’t, this month we’re serving up succotash, a mixture of tasty morsels that will help to inform and encourage you.

We are especially excited about the return of Dr. Karolyn Thompson as well as our upcoming monthly radio segment on WBFJ.

We thank God and His people for every gift, every referral, and every opportunity that comes our way.

In His grace,

Dr. Joe Verga

Associates in Christian Counseling

Nearly twenty years ago church and lay leaders perceived a need in our community for professional counseling that integrated current mental health practices with a Christian world view. Associates in Christian Counseling was founded within that spirit and tradition. In 1991, it was incorporated as a 501 (C) (3) not-for-profit organization.

As a mental health center, Associates has delivered professional services to nearly ten thousand clients. As a ministry, we are committed to serve all who seek help from any faith or background. To date we have provided over $1.6 million worth of services through our Client Assistance Program to those who demonstrate financial need.

In 2006, we began a new chapter in our story through a partnership with the Surry Baptist Association in Mount Airy. We now staff a counseling office on their campus bringing the same professional care and ministry to people in our northern counties and southern Virginia. Just as in our original location, people of any faith or background may come for services. The client assistance for this area is generously provided by churches in the Surry association.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye - WBFJ

For those of you who look forward to the new focus each month in our e-newsletter,
WBFJ will now offer a “sneak preview.”

On the first Wednesday of each month, an Associates in Christian Counseling staff member may be heard on WBFJ from 8:30-9AM. They will discuss the topic of that month’s e-newsletter as well as take on-air questions. The e-newsletter issue with additional articles on that topic will be available by mid-month. To subscribe to the e-newsletter, visit our website at www.christiancounseling.org.

Tune in to WBJF on Wednesday, August 1st, from 8:30-9AM
to hear Associates in Christian Counseling on the air!

Disaster Response Training

Both Hurricane Katrina and the shootings at Virginia Tech, make us aware that natural or man-made disasters may strike at any time in any part of the country. Our May e-newsletter featured an interview with our own, Dr. Heath Greene, who served on the campus of Virginia Tech for the first two days as classes resumed. This summer, Associate therapist Rebecca Lowry is volunteering to work with any VT students living in our area.

With that in mind, several of Associates staff members will be attending a workshop in Greensboro this month for behavioral disaster response training. It will include information on types of disasters, reactions to disasters, self-care, and special populations. Although it would be our prayer to never need this special training, receiving it will enable us to fulfill our ministry call to “see to it that no one misses the grace of God.”

THANK YOU!

We would like to thank our Honor Roll of Donors—

338 individuals, couples, churches, and businesses—

who supported Associates in Christian Counseling
in the past year!

A Thought

This year, or this month, or, more likely, this very day, we have failed to practice ourselves the kind of behaviour we expect from other people.
