July 2006

For most of us, summer means time for vacation and a chance to “recharge our batteries.”

With that in mind, this issue focuses on mental health—what it is and a special “recipe” for good mental health from ACC’s staff.

Enjoy the newsletter, but be sure to take time to play when you’re done reading!

Mental Health - What Is It?

We often use the phrase “mental health.” At ACC, therapists would describe themselves as mental health professionals. Have you ever thought about how you would define that term? If defining mental health comes easily, how would you define good mental health? Read More

ACC's Recipe for Good Mental Health

Summer brings a change of pace, family gatherings, potlucks, and picnics. In keeping with all these activities, I recently asked ACC’s staff what ingredients they would include in a recipe for “Good Mental Health.” Here are their thoughts—

Creative Expression
- releases the creative part of us and lets the inner child out for recess!

Friends - remind us that we are not alone and that we matter to others! Healthy, supportive friends are good for a sound mind. They help restore our perspective if we find ourselves looking through the wrong end of the telescope.

Humor - a healthy dose does a body good!

Play - revisit the joy of simply being alive! Play hard, play sports, play hide & seek, play dress up with your kids!

Rest - a good helping of quiet time to rest your mind! Stop rushing into activities without time to slow down, rest, and reflect! Make time to connect with yourself!

Spiritual Refreshing - Dive deeply into Scripture, either swim around a favorite
chapter or wade into some less familiar territory. Allow God’s Word to wash over you and bring new insights into your life. Hop out, dry off, and apply what the Lord has shown you!

In addition, two members of ACC’s staff were members of the congregation at the time which enabled me to get to know them personally. Read More
