January 2006

If you are feeling low on fuel after the holidays, this is the issue for you. Burnout robs us of our peace and joy, and can seriously undermine our relationships, our service, and our work. The start of another year always reminds me that God’s grace is abundant and fresh everyday. It never runs out, even though we do!

As we look ahead to the 2006 banquet, we are very excited to have basketball legend David Thompson as our speaker. Please be sure to read the article about him in this issue.

Thanks to all our friends and supporters for seeing us through 2005.

Dr. Joe Verga
Executive Director, ACC

A NEW YEAR - EXUBERANCE OR EXHAUSTION

For some, January means a clean page on the calendar, a new beginning, a fresh start. It’s exciting! For others, having gotten through the holiday season may feel more like being the last runner collapsing across the finish line utterly spent and exhausted. For those, January feels more like time for the vow, “Never again!” Welcome to burnout. Read More

BURNOUT AND WOMEN

Although burnout does not occur in one sex more than another, or in one season more than another, this post-holiday/resolution time seemed an appropriate one to give some thought to burnout. I’ve asked the female therapists at ACC, to share their thoughts and insights as professionals and as women. Read More

DAVID THOMPSON: THE REST OF THE STORY

For many North Carolinians and other ACC basketball fans, David Thompson’s story ended in the 1980’s. A once-in-a-generation player, the Shelby, NC native led the 1973-74 North Carolina State Wolfpack to its first NCAA title, winning him accolades to this day as one of the five greatest college players of all time. He was the No. 1 draft pick in both the NBA and ABA in 1975. When the two leagues merged in 1978, Thompson signed the largest contract in NBA history. His career won him election into the NBA Hall of Fame. But Thompson disappeared just as rapidly as he arrived when cocaine and alcohol abuse robbed him of his skills, his fortune, and his family. By the early 1980s, Thompson's life had hit rock bottom and his career was over.

What most fans have not heard, however, is the rest of David Thompson’s inspiring story. In his darkest moments, David gave his life to Christ. That decision, God’s grace and faithfulness, and the counseling, ministry and love of others brought about a restoration of all things that are truly important in his life. Today Thompson is not only clean and sober, but is ministering to others – especially children who come from communities that have the most challenging needs.

We invite you to join us and bring your friends and loved ones to this memorable evening, Tuesday, March 28th, 2006, at 6:30PM at the Benton Convention Center, Winston-Salem, NC. Look for ticket information in our February issue.

WHY I SERVE - STEVE ROBERTSON

Steve Robertson has served on the board of Associates in Christian Counseling since 2004.

“I’d known Joe Verga for a number of years as a member of my church and Sunday School class long before I knew much about ACC. My experience with ACC became quite personal when my wife and I availed ourselves of their services for some family counseling,” Steve shared candidly. Years later when asked to serve on the Board, he didn’t hesitate.

Robertson believes that most pastors and churches don’t have the time or the training to deal with the great need for counseling which exists in our community. “Marriages and families are struggling. Individuals are dealing with personal issues. ACC provides a safe, confidential place with trained, professional counselors. Their guidance is consistent with God’s Word and it works.”

“I truly believe in this ministry. I have a great deal of love and respect for ACC’s dedicated staff and I consider it a privilege to serve,” Steve concluded.

Steve Robertson is the President and CEO, The Robertson Group & Affiliated Companies and currently serves as Chairman, Board of Trustees, NC Baptist Hospital and Vice Chairman, Board of Directors, WFUBMC

ARE YOU BURNING OUT?

Rating yourself on a scale of 1 (no change) to 5 (great deal of change),
think back over the past 6 months or more—

1. Have you noticed changes in yourself or the world around you?
2. Do you tire more easily? Feel fatigued rather than energetic?
3. Are people annoying you by telling you “you don’t look so good lately”?
4. Are you working harder and harder and accomplishing less and less?
5. Are you increasingly cynical and disenchanted?
6. Are you often invaded by a sadness you can’t explain?
7. Are you forgetting appointments, deadlines, personal possessions?
8. Are you increasingly irritable, short-tempered, and more disappointed in the people around you?
9. Are you seeing close friends and family members less frequently?
10. Are you suffering from physical complaints—aches, pains, headaches, a lingering cold?
11. Do you feel disoriented when the activity of the day comes to a halt?
12. Is joy elusive?
13. Are you unable to laugh at a joke about yourself?
14. Does sex seem like more trouble than it’s worth?
15. Do you have very little to say to people?

If your score was:
0-25 you’re doing fine
26-35 start noticing things in your life
36-50 you’re a candidate for burnout
51-65 you are burning out
65+ you are in a dangerous place threatening your health

Excerpts from
THE PARADOX OF TIME
--Dr. Bob Moorehead

We spend more, but have less

We buy more, but enjoy it less

We have more conveniences, but less time

We plan more, but accomplish less

We’ve learned to rush, but not to wait

We’ve learned how to make a living,
But not a life

We’ve added years to life, not life to years
