April 2009

Dear Friends,

I find it fascinating to see how God brings things about based on unmet needs and willing hearts.  That theme is apparent in this edition which reflects on the founding of Associates.

The other fascinating thing is how history repeats itself.  A current trend known as integrative medicine is based on the idea of putting the patient back into the treatment equation. About 50 years ago, the field of Christian counseling began with the effort to integrate psychology and Christianity, or in other words, to put God back into the mental health treatment equation.

With our 10th annual banquet just around the corner, it seemed a good time to reflect on our history and Christian counseling.  We hope you have made plans to join us and hear our special speaker, Coach Jerry Moore, of Appalachian State football fame.

Blessings,
Dr. Joe Verga
Executive Director

The Heart of a Ministry

I had never heard of James Fraser, a worker with the China Inland Mission, in the early 1900s until recently when a friend shared some of his thoughts on the work God calls
us to--

“It has come home to me very forcibly of late that it matters little what the work is in which we are engaged so long as God has put it into our hands.”

Faithfulness

Hudson Taylor once said,

“A little thing is a little thing, but faithfulness in a little thing is a great thing.”

Since Associates began its work in the Triad nearly 18 years ago—
--nearly 12,000 clients have been served and
--nearly $2 million in client assistance or reduced fee counseling has been provided to
those desiring change but with limited means.

A Thought

For we are God’s workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus to do good works,
which God prepared in advance for us to do.
